Penn State to Partner with Government to Renew American Manufacturing

Penn State will participate in a new partnership geared to revitalize American manufacturing and encouraging companies to invest in the United States. They will receive $30 million in federal funding and $40 million from consortium members.

Earlier this year Congress approved a plan to invest $1 billion to start up a national network of up to 15 manufacturing innovation institutes around the country that would serve as regional hubs of manufacturing excellence. The National Additive Manufacturing Innovation Institute, a pilot program of this plan, will bridge the gap between basic research and product development for manufacturing.

The Department of Defense sees them customizing parts on site for operational systems that would otherwise be expensive to make or ship.
