Skilled Laborers Disappearing as Baby Boomers Retire

In Waterloo, Iowa manufacturers are losing their labor force as their baby boomer skilled laborers rapidly head into retirement. Industry leaders now search the local high schools to intice males and female students alike to consider a career as trained machinists.

Because it’s hard to find skilled workers many companies now accept applications from almost any applicant with or without experience. Even so developing young machinists still isn’t keeping up with industry demands.

Some companies are searching as low as middle school and are setting up training programs for youth inside the company.
