OSHA Tells Employers How to Handle Clean-up of Florescent Light Bulbs

A mercury spill at the work place isn’t the end of the World. There are some simple cleanup procedures employers may take when a mercury flourescent bulb breaks.

First, when a bulb breaks, windows and door should be opened for ventilation. You should also contact fellow workers and tell them to stay away from the area. Don’t use a broom, but do use appropriate gloves that are chemical resistant. Use sticky tape to get out the little fragments.

After cleanup, make sure to to wipe down the area so that it is clean and dispose of the material properly and thoroughly wash hands as well.
